Infection rates in primary inflatable penile prosthesis: a systematic review and meta-analysis of antibiotic-coated versus non-coated devices

IJIR: Your Sexual Medicine Journal · 2026

A systematic review and meta-analysis of more than 100,000 patients comparing infection rates between penile prostheses with and without an antibiotic coating. Coated devices showed a significant reduction in infections, with no difference between the two main brands on the market. More on penile prosthesis.

Non-surgical vs surgical management for major ischemic priapism of 36 hours duration

The Journal of Sexual Medicine · 2026

A comparison of conservative and surgical management of prolonged ischemic priapism, a urological emergency. Among 76 patients, those treated with conservative measures alone needed a further procedure in 63% of cases, compared with 10% of those who had early surgery.

A review of the effect of varicocele surgery on testosterone levels in men with hypogonadism. It concludes that testosterone does rise, but only modestly and in a compensatory way, and that patients should keep their expectations in check: the surgery is not indicated as a hormonal treatment. A meta-analysis of randomized trials on the effect of alpha-lipoic acid supplementation on semen analysis parameters. In 250 men, the supplement improved sperm motility and morphology, but there was no proven increase in pregnancy rates. More on male infertility.
